Wow! I had a heel stress fracture too (took 6 months for me to recover on that one cuz I kept trying to run on it)! However, I never had problems with my achilles at the insertion/bursa. My problem was about 1" above insertion. FWIW I had little help from any of the local doctors I saw. I went to a number of orthopedics and podiatrists in Florida over the years. None were any good for my problem. Pretty much a total waste of time. Baravarian out in Santa Monica was the bomb. He said he could fix me and he did. The surgery was far from ugly and it definitely worked. I do have a nice scar, though! I was in and out within a few hours. Even flew home the same day.

: I have had 2 MRI's . . . one was done January
: 2007 and the other January 2008. Neither
: really showed tears but my bursa sac was
: really big, there was lots of fluid and, in
: the second, the tendon is thicker than a
: "normal" tendon. However, I was
: diagnosed with tendinosis. I have done
: everything to avoid surgery for 2 reasons.
: The the research I did led me to believe
: that it is an ugly surgery and that there is
: no gurarantee that I would recover 100%. In
: addition, my dr's kind of made me exhaust
: every other possible means before surgery.
: Now, I am beginning to feel like surgery is
: the ONLY option. I should also mention that
: I am dealing with a fractured calcanea (heel
: bone) on that same foot - probably because I
: ran through pain for so long and my tendon
: wasn't working so my heel took a ton of
: impact. I can't remember the last time I
: didn't FEEL my left leg. There has been
: pain or discomfort there for so long that
: it's normal to me. I go back to the Dr on
: Tuesday so we'll see what she says. I get
: married in September so I guess I will have
: to decide if I do it now or wait until I get
: home from my honeymoon. It's been a long,
: frustrating road, but I don't have to tell
: you that! Thanks for you response. I
: appreciate all of the input I can get from
: someone who's been through it. Somehow, I
: don't think my Dr really understands what I
: am going through!
:
: Best of luck to you!

: Have you had an MRI or received a diagnosis?
: As you know from reading my situation,
: nothing but surgery worked for me. I was
: diagnosed with tendinosis which pretty much
: never goes away on its own. All the PT,
: exercises, etc. that I did was a waste of
: time and delayed the inevitable. Don't
: construe this as me talking you into
: something as important as surgery. However,
: had I known ten years ago what I know now, I
: would have opted for surgery long ago.
:
: By the way, I'm going to have to have my
: right tendon done soon and feel much more
: comfortable with the process knowing that it
: works. Good luck!

: I just read your blog about your ongoing
: battle with your achilles. It was if you
: were in my head because what you wrote is so
: right on. I am a marathon runner turned
: tri-athlete who has been injured going on 2
: years now. Like you, I have tried
: everything - PT, ice, heat and, the hardest
: thing of all, rest. I wore a walking boot
: for over 6 months and was in a cast and on
: crutches for almost 3 months. Nothing seems
: to work. I have had moments where I think I
: am better . . . only to wake up the next day
: in pain. Sometimes I wonder if I am crazy?!
: I am also guilty of probably trying to do
: too much, too soon. But, compared to my
: normal activity level, I don't think it's
: too much to walk my dogs! I feel like I am
: never going to run again. I am frustrated
: and don't know what to do? My mom, who is
: 53 recently (late January) had surgery to
: repair her achilles tendon and she is
: practically 100% now. I have done
: everything to avoid surgery and all I have
: to show for it is a purple, swollen and
: throbbing tendon - go figure? Any thoughts?
