Wed: bad gnats....very tired, esp. after masters.

Sat: Good group ride with Steve H, R, Paul, Rob and Tim Neumann. Felt very strong today being able to keep up with SH and R. They took it pretty hard in the beginning, as they always do when they ride together, which was enough to give R the twinklies in his AT. He decided to ride steady thereafter and I stayed behind him to make sure he didn't get out of the saddle approaching the hills. I hate being a nag.

Sun: Had enough discomfort in my left arm (because of several wasp stings) to cut my recovery ride short. The limb blew up to more than 2x it's normal size. Gonna have to make it up tomorrow.

It's all a blur...can't say that I've been keeping a log. I signed up for the Escape race in Miami but I got runner's knee when I tried to start running. If I got 10 miles in one week within the last month, I considered myself lucky. As for swimming, just haven't been in the mood although I do try and jump in the water to play with Renee.

Now, cycling, that's a totally different scenario. It's kind of ironic these days that I would be in the hills of San Antonio on a Saturday or Sunday and Rob at home doing chores and watching the kids. Of course, his surgery less than 2 months ago have tapered off his training plan as well as a big, big land deal at work. His ankle is getting better although he does worry about any little tinge he may feel in his AT. There really isn't any point in rushing his recovery since tri-season is waning so he'll take the conservative route in his return to running.

The last couple of weeks though, he and I have been able to get some good saddle time together. If I didn't drag him out of bed to drive to the ballfield, I've pulled him out the door for a fast ride to St. Pete. This last Sunday, I got him to ride not only to the North Shore pool but also to Fort Desoto with the "training ride" group and then back home to Tampa. Man, we were both exhausted after we got back. It was about 90 miles for us, a distance we both haven't done since May. I poked fun at him that evening since he appeared more tired than me but, come Sunday, he was dragging my butt back on the bike for a morning AND an evening ride. I think he's trying to get back at me for something.

I'll try and keep some kind of log from now on. I need to know if I'm headed in the right direction. I pester Rob endlessly for him to help me become much faster and stronger on the bike. I may never get where I want to go but I sure am gonna have fun trying.

June 12-18

Thurs.: Don't quote me on the log on the right. I've been pretty busy and I didn't keep track this week. The only thing I am 100% sure of is that I've rode twice with my husband, Marquis de Sade, who made it difficult for me to get back in the saddle each of the following days. Actually, it wasn't just him: the wind from Alberto made it very difficult for me early on in the week.

Sun.: Yikes, what a low-low training week. I'm going to try and ride every day next week, including back-to-back hard rides on the weekend.

June 5-11

I've gained 5 lbs since the half 2 weeks ago. My plan is that I'll ride at least 6 days a week but I'll have to try and get some swims and runs in or I will not be able to maintain the mιnage ΰ trois I established with Ben & Jerry early this year.

Wed.: I made Rob run a measly 4 miles w/me. Half-way, he turns to me and says, "I'm either going really slow or your running really fast." So, I dusted him and yelled back, "Now, you're going really slow." Of course, on the last 1/2 mile he spat me out the back and I huffed and puffed all the way home.

I can't wait until we have our babysitter back. I am getting very sick of riding on the trainer.

Sun: As you can see, there is no rhyme or reason to my schedule except consistent biking hrs. Run/Swim fell off the charts this week. Oh well.

Rode to St. Pete late in the afternoon w/Rob yesterday and the wind was pretty bad heading out. It was a good effort and I felt it in my legs when I rode in a group ride today.

May 29-June 4

Mon: Meant to do 4 hrs in the hills today but Rob and I couldn't get out of bed. We're both quite sore from yesterday's sprint. Instead, we suffered through laps and laps on Davis (~3 hrs) during the hottest part of the day. Even the wind didn't offer any relief.

Tues: Been in the saddle pretty regularly these last few days and I've noticed that my shoulders hurt a lot more than on a TT bike and my bum is very, very sore. Gonna try and be religious about the Assos cream from now on.

Swam >2,500 yds this a.m Since I started bringing Nicole to a.m. practice, I figured I should be in there too in order to offer her a bit of motivation. She's the only one in her age group doing 2-a-days now and I am sure she is thinking how much it sucks to have Rob and me as her parents.

Fri: Ran yesterday for the first time, not including the sprint, since Disney. My right calf is still tight and I even felt it tug on my AT a bit. What a hoot. Swimming 2x a day this week has really helped Nicole. Her endurance on long sets have improved and now she's confident that she'll survive the week at UF. She also found out that Gator coaches will also make her run a few miles everyday so we bought her a pair of Asics DS Trainers. I have to admit that I'm kind of envious of her because I sure could benefit from a swim "boot camp."

We sure are going to miss our little peanut next week. :(

Sun: I've decided that I want to kick ass on the bike. I am always asking roadies how and they always give the "ride a lot more and, from the get-go, do your fair share of the work up front and never sit back..." response. I've been doing that since I started riding seriously in August but I am a very impatient person. So, besides pouring over some books on riding, I am going to start incorporating weights into my training, especially for the core and legs.

May 22-28

Mon: I don't plan on being on a structured training schedule for awhile, or at least, until I get motivated to race a triathlon again. I'll probably go back to registering for sprints, on a whim, and w/o a lot of training. I do plan however to get stronger on a bike because a) I just got my new ride (shown below) and it's beaut, and b) I love being in the saddle.

Wed: Yesterday, I rode my road bike for the first time with Rob. Man, my legs are so sore. Ouch, will someone have a pity party for me?

Thurs: Went to masters' yesterday. Not too sure why.

Fri: Finished up my 70.3 race report. I figure I could learn from my experience and do better on my next half IM.

Sat: Rob and I headed out for a 60-miler late in the day. Man, was it hot. Legs still felt tired but I was able to stay right behind Rob on the Gandy. Road bike rides and shifts like a dream although it is much slower than my TT bike in the downhills and into the wind.

Sun: Decent race at CRTRI. I still feel like I need to catch my breath, so I am in the midst of paying for my efforts @ Disney. Overall though, I'm very pleased with this race. I beat or was near a few girls at this race who slaughtered me at Escape 1-1/2 months ago.

Rode in the p.m. for a toe-tapper.

May 15-21 (race week!)

Mon: I'm going to try and swim as much as I can this week.

Yesterday's ride with Rob and Steve showed me how much bike handling skills I have yet to learn. We were all going pretty fast around our convoluted route and Steve would always put 2 bike lengths on us w/ every turn. Of course, his response is always, "Donna, I have drills for those too...want me to teach you?" Well, duh, of course!

Tues: All is right with the world again...Rob is running pretty well these days. As for me, my head still feels pretty foggy and I sure hope it clears w/in 48 hrs.

Thurs: Thankfully, I woke up this morning w/o having to blow my nose. Getting pretty excited about Sunday. I followed these tips from Gordo in Nov and it worked pretty well. Gonna do the same for Disney.

May 8-14 (Swim-build)

Mon: May have to juggle weekend stuff because Nicole's long-course season starts this weekend.

Tues: Had a great swim, perhaps got a fitness boost from the 2.4. Kept 4x100s in the 1:30ish range with little rest in between yet OW swimming seems to get slower. Wish I could figure how to get past my mental block of the ocean. Rob is getting pretty depressed about his AT, then his knee, then his AT...I may lose my training partner soon. Don't know how I can keep the motivation going if he decides to bail on 2006 and undergo surgery. Man, we're getting old.

Thurs: Bailed on master's last night...just felt like swimming aerobically nonstop in the FastLane. Triceps have been pretty sore for the last 3 days...the first part of my run felt pretty good but on return trip the FL sun got the better part of me. Yeah, though, it was my last long run until Disney.

Fri: Brick yesterday was very hard. Maybe I should have done more swim-ride bricks...maybe the humidity is getting worse...maybe it's 'cause I have the sniffles...maybe I should stop whining.

Sat: I knew this cold was coming...my swim coach was sick, as well as a bunch of others @ the UT pool. Oh well.

Sun: Went out with the Rob and Steve for their "easy" ride. But I should have known better. It was a ball-buster at times.

May 1-7 (Run-Build)

Gotta get back on track for the half. Didn't realize an IV post-race would allow me not to feel even the slightest soreness. Would it be illegal to do this after every race?

Mon: Piddled around the pool yesterday while Rob, Steve and Taylor swam laps. Rob wants me to go for a 4-hr ride w/them tomorrow but I don't think I'm recovered yet.

Tues: Ran intervals today and could barely manage 6:55 miles. I think I'm tired from the race. I'm happy though since I changed my running form ΰ la Gordon Pirie and it seems things are falling into place. The last period I was able to run miles around 7:00s was our final year in Miami when I ran in most of the Footworks road races. Since then, I've known that I still had it in me but after the move and then Renee's arrival, I just couldn't conjure up the motivation. Recently, much to my left knee's dissatisfaction, I had to start incorporating speed work. It's holding up but there are definitely good days and some bad ones. I also think what helped me at St. A's is that I stayed in my small chainring the entire bike portion so that my legs would be fresh off the bike. At previous races, I didn't look at the big picture and wasted a lot of energy mashing big gears in an attempt to clock top 3 in my AG's bike splits. But after Escape, I decided I had to play it smarter.

Wed: Ran sub-9:00s for 10 mile w/o any problems and then found myself seeing stars at 10.25 @1:30 p.m. Think I'll skip masters tonight and just do an ez 30 mins. in our FL.

April 24-30 (Taper for St A's)

Gonna keep up the swimming and throw in a couple of spurts of intensity on the bike...but that's about all. Cooling my jets this week.

Mon: Wore rubberbands around my fingers @ swim because I discovered that I open my fingers during my pull.

Wed: Took  the mile swim really easy and finished <30 min with a lot of sighting. I know, kind of slow but at least I didn't feel tired afterwards.

Thurs: Still using rubberbands...I wish I could swim as fast as my 12-yr old. She swam her 75s yesterday @00:45-00:49s and kept up with the high-school kids.

Sat: Tried to swim out to a buoy with Mary D but the wind was blowing from the east @20 knots making the ocean pretty choppy. I could only make it part of the way and decided I couldn't leave until I made a 2nd attempt. Luckily, Kathy F accompanied me and I made it out to the 1st buoy in order to clear the demons in my head.

Sun: I saved my legs on the bike so I could run as hard as I could although I don't know how I ran that fast (I thought I clocked <47). I guess I spent the run leg punishing myself for my lack of moral integrity for not stopping when the girl crashed in front of me. But it also helps to have someone to duke it out with almost every mile (as well as hearing Lisa Feldt @ mile 4.5, "There you are, Donna."). Anyway, I did run as fast as I could and put myself in the med tent w/an IV immediately after crossing the line.

April 17-23 (Run-Build)

Mon: Forgot how hard it was to swim nonstop in this dreaded pool of ours.

Wed: For the first time in 1.5 week, I didn't start my workout with a "heavy heart" feeling. Also, I didn't have to take an aspirin or ibu this a.m.

Random thoughts during today's slow, long ride:

• it's best to just aim for squirrels in the street;

• this city doesn't spend enough money on pedestrian-friendly benefits like sidewalks, water fountains, and bike lanes;

• pedestrians don't know to walk on the rt side...neither do people who walk their dogs;

• since I started training regularly, my lawn has turned from green St. Augustine grass to brown weeds and dirt; and

• squirrels are just stupid and deserve to be run over by my bike tire.

Fri: I pushed it a little on the run last night and am feeling my bad knee today. I also moved my run from mid-day to the evening since I've been beating myself up running in the hot sun. Unfortunately, my endorphins kicked in by dinner time and I was wide awake all night.

Sun: I learned some important things at the swim clinic yesterday. Hopefully, slight changes in my stroke will help me in the open water. I also learned by picking other triathletes' brains that I am not sighting enough.

Not too sure why I still ended up in the double digits for my bike total...can't seem to get off my saddle, nor do I really want to.

April 10-16 (Run-Build)

Mon: I was able to keep 6x100s @ 1:30 or under today. That's a big step for me.

Tue: Succumbed to another cheeseburger run at McD's. This time, had an order of large fries as well.

Wed: Had to pick up the pace on the way back when Steve Mandel joined me. He's such a nice guy ...and single, for those women out there reading this.

Thurs: Heard that I have a target on my back...actually, quite honored. I know that in the past that I've been caught by some fast-running ladies on the run so my plan tomorrow is to go hard and not hold back on the swim and bike.

Sat: I knew that, if I wanted to do well at Escape, I probably shouldn't have run my long run on Wed. and then biked intervals the following day. But it is what it is...the upcoming half IM is key and today was simply a great training day. Waah!

Sun: Rob doesn't know what he's talking about—I know Red Bull isn't gonna make me fast...hopefully, it'll help me from feeling like I have to nap take every day. Starbucks isn't doing the job anymore. One thing he is right about though....it sure does clean the pipes pretty quickly. At least it did for me.

April 3-9 (Bike-Build)

Mon: Need a rest day. I take these as opportunities to catch up on chores and yard work. If I didn't, nothing would ever get done around here.

Tue: Have to ride the trainer for a few days since I have Renee home with me. My mind went numb before my arse did. BORING! Run went very well since funky knee thing doesn't hurt except whilst walking.

Thurs: Week isn't going as originally planned because of the hr change, the girls being sick, etc.

Found a hot spot on my VMO and worked on it. Knee felt good today on the run but it's starting to feel like summer. I will have to try and do the same to Rob's knee for a few days.

Fri: Another day on the trainer.

Sat: Had an awesome time in the hills with a group, including BAT members Martha, Anders, Kathy, May Li and Mary. That Anders is workhorse! Tried to do my fair share of the work but the wind got to me at times and rendered me useless.

Ran 6 in the eve and what a glorious night to be out for a run. Was very tired when I got home though so I will commit a major sin by blowing off a long workout this week (the run). Starting Monday, it's run-build anyway.

March 27-April 2 (Bike-Build)

Been eating a lot more cheeseburgers lately.

Mon.: Rob and I were feeling the effects of the weekend rides at master's. He left early while I struggled through practice.

Wed.: Run went well and so did my swim but I'm starting to feel like a zombie by the time evenings roll around. Rob's run didn't go so well since his VMO must be suffering from spasms from the 100-mile bike ride and his knee is giving him issues. When's he's down, I'm down. Don't feel motivated to get on my bike tomorrow.

Sat.: I was able to stay at the front of today's group ride and do a lot of the work. I feel like I get stronger on the bike w/each passing week. Unfortunately, all this cycling is giving my knee fits just as Rob is presently experiencing. Funny though, it hurts to walk and not run. I guess I'll take it.

Sun.: Blowing off my Sunday swim again this week because of lack of sleep. Poor Renee...she wakes up at all hours of the night because of her cold. Poor mom!

March 20-26 (Bike-Build)

It's all about the bike (and as always, my family) for the next few weeks.

Wed: Main set @ masters - 1 mile nonstop @ <31:00.

Sat. and Sun.: Hill-riding went extremely well and a friend took me over almost every hill in San Antonio to work on pedaling drills; on Sunday, main peloton went off pretty hard and spent a lot of energy trying to stay with them...after reaching the 3rd SAG stop, I decided against the additional 38 miles. My bum is officially sore.

Missed the weekend swim and run but, oh well.

Mon: Was able to do my 100s @ 1:35s (I know that's slow but not for me).

Wed: is it a given that one must lose several toenails when increasing running mileage?

Sat: Was able to recover better on the hills but there's still so much to learn. Hopefully, experienced riders will bear with my inexperience.

Sun: Today, I found myself able to keep up with some very fast guys without much difficulty despite being tired from yesterday's long hill ride. Although bike-build doesn't start until tomorrow, I would consider this weekend part of it.

Time to start cranking up the FastLane...Y pool was disgusting.

March 6-12 (Base)

Week started off well. I actually felt decent at Tuesday morning swim practice (probably because I took a rest day) and Wednesday's long run wasn't as taxing as last week's 10-miler...was extremely busy with designing an annual report so I missed my nighttime swim.

Rob and I made rookie mistakes at Saturday's TT. Live and learn. He maintained a 27mph average but he was still disappointed in his performance. Oh brother, what I would do with for a time like his (15:36). I did manage to come in only 2:30 after him so I should be happy (4th). My average was 23+mph...but I wanted it to be >24. I'm gonna make it there even if it kills me.

Man, the number 1 girl, Allison Schneider, kicks A-S-S!

February 27-March 5 (Base)

My goal at the beginning of this week was to bring the run up >30 mi. Wednesday's long run was the first since October. Knee w/o ACL or medial meniscus held up but endurance, zilch. Also started incorporating intervals in my cycling.

Sat: Rob and I started running in a nice under-utilized park that has a 1.47 running trail that's forgiving to both my knee and his ATs.

Sun: changed a flat on my clincher for the first time. Got so frustrated with the Vittoria tire that I threw my wheel down on the ground. Man, those are a b**ch to change. It took me almost 20 minutes.

Mon: I don't know why I showed up at swim practice Monday night. My pulse wouldn't settle down after the first interval. Still fried from the du.

Sunday bike ride in the hills got rained out so Rob and I rode locally... had to send him on his speedy way after 25 miles...just couldn't keep his pace 2 days in a row. Watched the marathoners suffer through wind and rain. Felt bad for them.

February 6-12 (Base)

Decided to start a structured plan this week after registering for Disney...had a wonderful break after MiamiMan in November although I did maintain decent hrs. on the bike since Rob wanted to ride w/me on the weekends.

Wed: Steve Mandel provided me with his company most of the way; of course, he was barely breathing and I was gasping.

Sat: My 2nd time in San Antonio (this time with with seasoned, versatile riders Martha, Linda Musante, and others) hurt like hell— much more than when I rode with Rob, Taylor and Martha 2 weeks ago. I think I need a new road bike because I can't get any power on my tri bike...also, totally confused on how I should be positioned while ascending.

Running mileage really low but it is the start of the season.
