basically an ez week on the bike. got a good cause to ride for on saturday as well as take the opportunity to ride on the new, $420-million selmon expressway bridge...may do that a couple of rounds or continue onto st.pete or davis island.

Wed: bad gnats....very tired, esp. after masters.

Sat: I was figuring Rob was going to try and drop everyone after the turnaround...he did and I spent one too many times trying to reel him in within a paceline of about 10-12. bah, we never caught him. Oh well.

Wed: Every time I try to run I ask myself, "Why am I out here suffering in this heat?"

Sat: Good group ride with Steve H, R, Paul, Rob and Tim Neumann. Felt very strong today being able to keep up with SH and R. They took it pretty hard in the beginning, as they always do when they ride together, which was enough to give R the twinklies in his AT. He decided to ride steady thereafter and I stayed behind him to make sure he didn't get out of the saddle approaching the hills. I hate being a nag.

Sun: Had enough discomfort in my left arm (because of several wasp stings) to cut my recovery ride short. The limb blew up to more than 2x it's normal size. Gonna have to make it up tomorrow.

It's all a blur...can't say that I've been keeping a log. I signed up for the Escape race in Miami but I got runner's knee when I tried to start running. If I got 10 miles in one week within the last month, I considered myself lucky. As for swimming, just haven't been in the mood although I do try and jump in the water to play with Renee.

Now, cycling, that's a totally different scenario. It's kind of ironic these days that I would be in the hills of San Antonio on a Saturday or Sunday and Rob at home doing chores and watching the kids. Of course, his surgery less than 2 months ago have tapered off his training plan as well as a big, big land deal at work. His ankle is getting better although he does worry about any little tinge he may feel in his AT. There really isn't any point in rushing his recovery since tri-season is waning so he'll take the conservative route in his return to running.

The last couple of weeks though, he and I have been able to get some good saddle time together. If I didn't drag him out of bed to drive to the ballfield, I've pulled him out the door for a fast ride to St. Pete. This last Sunday, I got him to ride not only to the North Shore pool but also to Fort Desoto with the "training ride" group and then back home to Tampa. Man, we were both exhausted after we got back. It was about 90 miles for us, a distance we both haven't done since May. I poked fun at him that evening since he appeared more tired than me but, come Sunday, he was dragging my butt back on the bike for a morning AND an evening ride. I think he's trying to get back at me for something.

I'll try and keep some kind of log from now on. I need to know if I'm headed in the right direction. I pester Rob endlessly for him to help me become much faster and stronger on the bike. I may never get where I want to go but I sure am gonna have fun trying.

June 12-18

Thurs.: Don't quote me on the log on the right. I've been pretty busy and I didn't keep track this week. The only thing I am 100% sure of is that I've rode twice with my husband, Marquis de Sade, who made it difficult for me to get back in the saddle each of the following days. Actually, it wasn't just him: the wind from Alberto made it very difficult for me early on in the week.

Sun.: Yikes, what a low-low training week. I'm going to try and ride every day next week, including back-to-back hard rides on the weekend.

June 5-11

I've gained 5 lbs since the half 2 weeks ago. My plan is that I'll ride at least 6 days a week but I'll have to try and get some swims and runs in or I will not be able to maintain the mιnage ΰ trois I established with Ben & Jerry early this year.

Wed.: I made Rob run a measly 4 miles w/me. Half-way, he turns to me and says, "I'm either going really slow or your running really fast." So, I dusted him and yelled back, "Now, you're going really slow." Of course, on the last 1/2 mile he spat me out the back and I huffed and puffed all the way home.

I can't wait until we have our babysitter back. I am getting very sick of riding on the trainer.

Sun: As you can see, there is no rhyme or reason to my schedule except consistent biking hrs. Run/Swim fell off the charts this week. Oh well.

Rode to St. Pete late in the afternoon w/Rob yesterday and the wind was pretty bad heading out. It was a good effort and I felt it in my legs when I rode in a group ride today.

May 29-June 4

Mon: Meant to do 4 hrs in the hills today but Rob and I couldn't get out of bed. We're both quite sore from yesterday's sprint. Instead, we suffered through laps and laps on Davis (~3 hrs) during the hottest part of the day. Even the wind didn't offer any relief.

Tues: Been in the saddle pretty regularly these last few days and I've noticed that my shoulders hurt a lot more than on a TT bike and my bum is very, very sore. Gonna try and be religious about the Assos cream from now on.

Swam >2,500 yds this a.m Since I started bringing Nicole to a.m. practice, I figured I should be in there too in order to offer her a bit of motivation. She's the only one in her age group doing 2-a-days now and I am sure she is thinking how much it sucks to have Rob and me as her parents.

Fri: Ran yesterday for the first time, not including the sprint, since Disney. My right calf is still tight and I even felt it tug on my AT a bit. What a hoot. Swimming 2x a day this week has really helped Nicole. Her endurance on long sets have improved and now she's confident that she'll survive the week at UF. She also found out that Gator coaches will also make her run a few miles everyday so we bought her a pair of Asics DS Trainers. I have to admit that I'm kind of envious of her because I sure could benefit from a swim "boot camp."

We sure are going to miss our little peanut next week. :(

Sun: I've decided that I want to kick ass on the bike. I am always asking roadies how and they always give the "ride a lot more and, from the get-go, do your fair share of the work up front and never sit back..." response. I've been doing that since I started riding seriously in August but I am a very impatient person. So, besides pouring over some books on riding, I am going to start incorporating weights into my training, especially for the core and legs.

May 22-28

Mon: I don't plan on being on a structured training schedule for awhile, or at least, until I get motivated to race a triathlon again. I'll probably go back to registering for sprints, on a whim, and w/o a lot of training. I do plan however to get stronger on a bike because a) I just got my new ride (shown below) and it's beaut, and b) I love being in the saddle.

Wed: Yesterday, I rode my road bike for the first time with Rob. Man, my legs are so sore. Ouch, will someone have a pity party for me?

Thurs: Went to masters' yesterday. Not too sure why.

Fri: Finished up my 70.3 race report. I figure I could learn from my experience and do better on my next half IM.

Sat: Rob and I headed out for a 60-miler late in the day. Man, was it hot. Legs still felt tired but I was able to stay right behind Rob on the Gandy. Road bike rides and shifts like a dream although it is much slower than my TT bike in the downhills and into the wind.

Sun: Decent race at CRTRI. I still feel like I need to catch my breath, so I am in the midst of paying for my efforts @ Disney. Overall though, I'm very pleased with this race. I beat or was near a few girls at this race who slaughtered me at Escape 1-1/2 months ago.

Rode in the p.m. for a toe-tapper.

May 15-21 (race week!)

Mon: I'm going to try and swim as much as I can this week.

Yesterday's ride with Rob and Steve showed me how much bike handling skills I have yet to learn. We were all going pretty fast around our convoluted route and Steve would always put 2 bike lengths on us w/ every turn. Of course, his response is always, "Donna, I have drills for those too...want me to teach you?" Well, duh, of course!

Tues: All is right with the world again...Rob is running pretty well these days. As for me, my head still feels pretty foggy and I sure hope it clears w/in 48 hrs.

Thurs: Thankfully, I woke up this morning w/o having to blow my nose. Getting pretty excited about Sunday. I followed these tips from Gordo in Nov and it worked pretty well. Gonna do the same for Disney.

May 8-14 (Swim-build)

Mon: May have to juggle weekend stuff because Nicole's long-course season starts this weekend.

Tues: Had a great swim, perhaps got a fitness boost from the 2.4. Kept 4x100s in the 1:30ish range with little rest in between yet OW swimming seems to get slower. Wish I could figure how to get past my mental block of the ocean. Rob is getting pretty depressed about his AT, then his knee, then his AT...I may lose my training partner soon. Don't know how I can keep the motivation going if he decides to bail on 2006 and undergo surgery. Man, we're getting old.

Thurs: Bailed on master's last night...just felt like swimming aerobically nonstop in the FastLane. Triceps have been pretty sore for the last 3 days...the first part of my run felt pretty good but on return trip the FL sun got the better part of me. Yeah, though, it was my last long run until Disney.

Fri: Brick yesterday was very hard. Maybe I should have done more swim-ride bricks...maybe the humidity is getting worse...maybe it's 'cause I have the sniffles...maybe I should stop whining.

Sat: I knew this cold was coming...my swim coach was sick, as well as a bunch of others @ the UT pool. Oh well.

Sun: Went out with the Rob and Steve for their "easy" ride. But I should have known better. It was a ball-buster at times.

May 1-7 (Run-Build)

Gotta get back on track for the half. Didn't realize an IV post-race would allow me not to feel even the slightest soreness. Would it be illegal to do this after every race?

Mon: Piddled around the pool yesterday while Rob, Steve and Taylor swam laps. Rob wants me to go for a 4-hr ride w/them tomorrow but I don't think I'm recovered yet.

Tues: Ran intervals today and could barely manage 6:55 miles. I think I'm tired from the race. I'm happy though since I changed my running form ΰ la Gordon Pirie and it seems things are falling into place. The last period I was able to run miles around 7:00s was our final year in Miami when I ran in most of the Footworks road races. Since then, I've known that I still had it in me but after the move and then Renee's arrival, I just couldn't conjure up the motivation. Recently, much to my left knee's dissatisfaction, I had to start incorporating speed work. It's holding up but there are definitely good days and some bad ones. I also think what helped me at St. A's is that I stayed in my small chainring the entire bike portion so that my legs would be fresh off the bike. At previous races, I didn't look at the big picture and wasted a lot of energy mashing big gears in an attempt to clock top 3 in my AG's bike splits. But after Escape, I decided I had to play it smarter.

Wed: Ran sub-9:00s for 10 mile w/o any problems and then found myself seeing stars at 10.25 @1:30 p.m. Think I'll skip masters tonight and just do an ez 30 mins. in our FL.
